Intuitive Machines, Inc. (NASDAQ:LUNR) HOLD

2026-08-04Current US$14.2Short HOLD · Med BUY · Long STRONG BUYBear US$9Base US$27Bull US$44

A hold at $14.20 near-term — a great story caught in a weak tape, nine days before a binary Q2 print (13 Aug). But the longer view is bullish: a Medium BUY and a Long STRONG BUY. The disciplined route is to wait for the earnings or a higher-low, then accumulate for the multi-year lunar build-out.

Intuitive Machines is the only private company to have landed on the Moon — more than once — and it trades about 70% below its May high. The framework's read splits by horizon: hold now, because the tape is down and Q2 earnings on the 13th are a binary; but accumulate for the long term, because on forward revenue and a $1.1bn backlog the value is real and government demand is the engine.

Why hold right now

Start with what keeps the near-term call a hold. The tape is the weak leg — monthly, weekly and daily trends are all down, and the stock sits about 70 percent below its May high near the bottom of its 52-week range. Today's 8 percent bounce to fourteen-twenty shows only on the hourly chart, which is already overbought; it hasn't turned the higher timeframes. And Q2 earnings land on the 13th of August, nine days out, on a name that routinely moves more than 5 percent on a print. That earnings gate caps our timing confidence at 40 percent and keeps the short-term signal at hold — buy on confirmation, not before.

Cheap for the growth

Now the reason to accumulate for the longer term. On the right lens for a pre-profit space name — forward revenue, not trailing earnings — this is the cheapest listed space pure-play. It trades about 2.6 times fiscal-26 sales and under 2 times out-year sales, against peers on tens to hundreds of times. Revenue is exploding: a record Q1 near three times last year, and a roughly one-billion-dollar 2026 guide. The analyst pack sits far above at a 42-dollar consensus, though those targets are stale and we discount them. It's cheap for the growth — not cheap on any current-earnings measure, which is why Medium is a BUY and Long a STRONG BUY.

Government demand is the engine

What powers the long case is government demand. The backlog is a record 1.1 billion dollars, roughly tripled year-on-year — mostly firm, multi-year, government work. The driver score is 68, a tailwind: NASA's lunar programme is intact, and in the 30th of June round it awarded 600 million in contracts, with Intuitive Machines taking 148.3 million of firm-fixed-price work — a standing positive, in place for weeks now, not fresh news. But be honest about the other side: in that same round its rival Astrobotic won the larger slice, competition is elevated, and the business is still pre-profit, burning roughly 55 million a quarter with free cash flow not turning positive until 2028.

What could go wrong

Keep the risks as loud as the upside, because this is a high-variance, binary-event name. Two things could break the case in the near term: an IM-3 mission failure later this year, or a disappointing Q2 print or guidance cut on the 13th — either could move the stock more than 20 percent. Dilution is real: the share count has gone from 61 million to about 159 million in fifteen months, and a working-capital squeeze could force more. Competition is intensifying, with Astrobotic and Firefly winning parallel awards. And the downside is genuine — the bear case is 9 dollars, roughly 37 percent below today, back toward the 52-week lows. The stop sits at ten-fifty. This is a starter-sized name, not a full position.

The 12-month scenarios frame it: a base case of 27 dollars at 55 percent — executing the guide, backlog converting, but competition capping the multiple — roughly 90 percent above today. A bull case of 44 dollars at 25 percent, on a successful IM-3 landing, a guidance raise and a continued space re-rating. And a bear of 9 dollars at 20 percent on a mission failure, a guidance cut or fresh dilution. Weighted, that centres near 27-and-a-half dollars — about 94 percent above the current price, and the arithmetic behind the Long STRONG BUY.

The verdict

Short HOLDMedium BUYLong STRONG BUY

So the honest call on Intuitive Machines: hold near-term, accumulate for the long term. The short-term signal is a hold — the tape is down and a binary earnings print lands on the 13th, so wait for confirmation. But it's a Medium BUY and a Long STRONG BUY: the cheapest listed space pure-play on forward revenue, a record backlog, and a NASA tailwind, with a weighted fair value near 27 dollars against fourteen-twenty today. A half-size starter now, with the balance added on a post-earnings reclaim or an 11-to-12-dollar higher-low, is the disciplined route. It stays a Donatien Pick — a live long-term buy.
