Twelve days, four moving inputs, and the same three answers. That is the finding, and it is worth more than a manufactured change. The share price is up 0.9% to C$18.86. Underneath it the US 10-year rose 16 basis points, the Canadian dollar weakened 1.3%, settled WTI climbed 7.8% to US$100.30, and the analyst consensus target rose from C$20.03 to C$20.53. Two of those pushed the valuation anchor down and two pushed it up, and they very nearly cancelled: the warranted ratio moved 0.89× → 0.90×.
Two data traps were caught before they reached a number here, and the second needed correcting twice. First, the WTI quote circulating on Monday was US$94 — a 6% collapse. It is an in-progress bar with no settlement published, so every commodity level here is the completed 18 September close of US$100.30, which is exactly what the macro report stamped. An earlier draft rested that rejection on the bar’s low lot count; that reasoning is withdrawn — an unfinished session has low volume by construction and proves nothing. The ground is the absence of a settle and the need for one consistent deck. Second, daily volume came in at 2.45×, over the 1.5× the Technical entry group requires — but 18 September was the quarterly expiry. An earlier draft discarded that volume outright; that verdict is withdrawn too. Tested in §7 against this name’s own four quarterly expiries, three of four ran hot and one did not, so the honest reading is uninformative rather than disproved. It does not decide the group either way: the MACD condition fails on its own.
The audit changed five published figures, and they matter more than the unchanged signals. Non-operating items were published on 9 September at 36.7% of net income and clean P/E at 13.17×; both were carried rather than recomputed, and neither is reproducible from any declared source. Corrected to 10.6% and 11.28×. The Tamarack–Headwater merger is C$10bn in the Clearwater heavy-oil play, not C$7.24bn in Whitecap’s light-oil acreage — a US dollar figure had been relabelled Canadian. And the US rig count is 595, +4, the highest since May 2024 and up 10% year on year, which cuts against the tight-market case rather than supporting it. The fifth is the crude-deck sensitivity range behind §4’s fragility, revised twice — the derivation and both revisions are recorded there.
Whitecap Resources is a Calgary oil and gas producer that pumped 388,894 barrels of oil equivalent a day in the second quarter of 2026 — 61% of it liquids (crude oil, condensate and natural gas liquids) and 39% natural gas. Its assets sit in three places: the light-oil waterfloods of southeast and southwest Saskatchewan, the conventional pools of central Alberta, and the Alberta Montney and Kaybob Duvernay, where the May 2025 all-share combination with Veren made it the largest landholder, with roughly 1.5 million net acres. What distinguishes it from a typical Canadian producer is the mix rather than the size: condensate and light oil sell at [8] a premium into Alberta's oil-sands diluent market, so 61% of the barrels generate about 93% of the revenue, while a large, low-decline waterflood and enhanced-oil-recovery base — roughly 52,000 barrels a day — keeps the corporate decline shallow and the sustaining capital modest. The company pays a monthly dividend, currently C$0.0608 a share, and is the seventh-largest oil and gas producer and fifth-largest gas producer in Canada.
1. Leverage into rising rates: clear. Net debt/EBITDA 0.59× against a 4× trigger. Rates are rising — the 10-year is at 4.94% and the Fed hiked 25bp on 16 September — so this trigger's macro arm is genuinely live and the leverage arm is what fails it, by a factor of nearly seven.
2. Valuation extreme: clear on both arms. The actual forward multiple of 13.45× is 0.90× warranted — nowhere near the 2.0× deep-expensive arm — and below the 15× sector guardrail, so the expensive-plus-catalyst arm cannot fire either.
3. Persistent negative earnings revisions: clear, and the direction is the opposite. Consensus forward EPS is C$1.4025 against C$1.397 twelve days ago, and the consensus target rose C$20.03 → C$20.53 with coverage deepening from 17 to 19 analysts.
4. Insider selling spike: no evidence found of C-suite disposals in the last 60 days. Recorded as a searched absence, not an assumed one — see §15.
5. Structural business-model threat: clear. The 8 September Tamarack–Headwater merger is a C$10bn combination in the Clearwater heavy-oil play — an adjacent fairway, not Whitecap’s light-oil acreage. It raises the price of future consolidation without impairing the asset. Scored in §3 as a competitive input, not an existential one.
| Sub-signal | Value | Read | Score |

| Operating margin | 41.7% (Q2) · 51.8% (TTM) | Q2 2026 operating income C$1,123.9m on C$2,698.5m revenue is 41.7%. An earlier draft printed the 51.8% trailing-twelve-month figure beside the quarterly arithmetic, which does not produce it; both are given here with their bases. Strong either way, and price-assisted | 80 |
| Return on equity | 12.6% | Respectable post-merger on a much larger equity base; not yet at pre-Veren returns | 62 |
| Balance sheet | 0.59× net debt/EBITDA | Genuinely conservative. Offset by the 0.557 current ratio — see Gate 1 | 78 |
| Revenue trajectory | +86.5% y/y | Scored down deliberately. This is the Veren combination plus a higher oil price, not organic growth. Q2 2026 C$2,698.5m vs Q2 2025 C$1,446.8m | 55 |
| Cash generation | C$1.48bn FCF | C$1.22 per share; management has pointed to roughly C$2.2bn of 2026 free cash flow, a figure carried in broker coverage of the 20 August ATB Cormark presentation rather than in the Q2 release itself, which raises production guidance to 385,000 boe/d with capital unchanged — the distinction is flagged because this figure is scored in Quality, in §4 optionality and in the base case | 82 |
| Industry benchmark — FCF breakeven vs spot | ~US$55 vs US$100.3 | Breakeven at ~55% of spot. Provenance caveat, repeated from the last run and still open: the US$55 figure is carried from the 16 August report and has not been re-verified against company disclosure this run. Scored at 82 rather than the 90–100 the ratio would imply, because the input is carried | 82 |

| Tamarack Valley / Headwater (merging, C$10bn, announced 8 Sep) | Adjacent-play consolidator, not a direct rival | Whitecap stable | An earlier draft had this wrong twice and both corrections matter. The deal is C$10bn, not C$7.24bn — that was the US$ figure relabelled as Canadian dollars, in a report stating no figure is FX-converted. And it is the Clearwater heavy-oil play (Marten Hills / Nipisi), creating the largest Clearwater pure-play at >80,000 boe/d — about a fifth of Whitecap’s 388,894 boe/d, and a different fairway from its Montney, Duvernay and Saskatchewan light-oil waterfloods rather than the same acreage an earlier draft claimed. It raises the price of future consolidation and signals confidence in Canadian oil; it does not compete for Whitecap’s barrels |
| Canadian Natural Resources, Suncor | Larger integrated peers | Stable | Scale advantage in capital cost and market access; neither competes directly for Whitecap's light-oil niche |
| US shale (Permian light) | Low-cost substitute supply | Stable | Sets the global marginal barrel. The only vector that can compress Whitecap's cost advantage, and it is doing so slowly — the evidence has moved against the benign read: the US rig count is 595, +4 week-on-week, the highest since May 2024 and +10% year on year, a second consecutive build. That is a supply response beginning, not an absent one. It does not impair the cost advantage today, which is why the sub-score holds at 75, but it is the mechanism by which it erodes |
Net effect on the moat: Cost Advantage held at 75 — the Tamarack–Headwater combination raises the acquisition bar without touching Whitecap's operating cost. Switching Costs and Pricing Power are structural zeroes for a commodity producer and are not adjustable by competitive news. Overall competitive threat level: moderate, trajectory stable.
The 9 September report published non-operating items at 36.7% of net income. That figure is withdrawn. It was carried forward rather than recomputed, and it cannot be reproduced: the provider quarterly series omits the September 2025 quarter entirely, so no trailing-twelve-month decomposition is computable from it. Re-derived on what the filings show:
| Basis | Operating income | Non-operating | Net income | Non-op % of net |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q2 2026 (single quarter) | C$1,123.9m | +C$94.2m | C$889.5m | 10.6% |
| Three available quarters | C$2,042.8m | −C$276.1m | C$1,219.0m | −22.6% |
The direction of the old claim survives; its size does not. Across the three quarters the provider does cover, non-operating items subtracted C$276.1m from net income — overwhelmingly Q1 2026 unrealised mark of −C$529.0m on the commodity contract book, the same hedge described in Gate 8, which is why that quarter printed C$0.02 EPS on C$2.08bn of revenue. Reported earnings understate the business rather than flatter it. But the effect is a fraction of what 36.7% implied, and in the latest quarter it reverses sign to a small positive.
The clean P/E of 13.17× published on 9 September is superseded; corrected, it is 11.28×. Construction, stated so it can be checked: three quarters of operating income (C$2,042.8m) taxed at the 25.2% effective rate those quarters actually paid, annualised by four-thirds, over 1,218.5m implied shares — operating EPS C$1.67. That is a construction, not a reported number, and it annualises a period containing one exceptional quarter, so treat it as a cross-check rather than a precision figure. It reads below the 13.45× forward multiple, which is the honest version of the old claim: on operating earnings this is cheaper than the headline, not dearer. At 10.6% the non-operating share also sits under the 15% threshold at which the framework requires the clean basis to drive the score — the §4 anchor runs on consensus forward EPS and is untouched by any of this.

FY2027 consensus C$1.4025 over trailing C$1.12 gives +25.2%, but that trailing figure is partly pre-merger; FY2026 C$1.485 → FY2027 C$1.4025 is −5.6%. Haircutting the first gives 18.9%; either way the 6% defensive/mature cap binds and is what the anchor uses, verified invariant across g of 5–8% |
| Warranted forward, uncapped | 17.15× | 17.59× | Two-stage; trailing form 18.18× restated per unit of forward earnings |
| Warranted, published | 15.0× | 15.0× | Energy guardrail binds in both runs — which is why 16bp on the 10-year changed nothing here |
| Actual, clean forward P/E | 13.45× | 13.39× | C$18.86 ÷ C$1.4025 forward EPS |
| Warranted ratio | 0.90 | 0.89 | Band Attractive, but inside the 0.80–1.00 fair-edge sub-band |
The uncapped warranted multiple fell from 17.59× to 17.15× on the rate move. It never reached the page, because the Energy sector guardrail of 15.0× was already binding and still is. So the 16bp did not touch the published anchor — but "rate-insensitive" would be the wrong lesson, and an earlier draft of this section drew it. Two corrections.
First, the crossing is nearer than stated. Solving the same two-stage model, the uncapped forward multiple falls below 15.0× at about +90 basis points on the 10-year — a 5.85% yield — not the 110bp an earlier draft published. Second, and more importantly, the 15.0× line is not fixed. The framework calibrates the guardrails to a ~4.5% 10-year and tightens them by roughly 10% per 1.5 percentage points above 5%. The 10-year printed 5.00% on 15 September and 5.01% on 16 September — two sessions before this report's 4.94% stamp. So the static-line assumption is already marginal, and above 5% the ceiling starts descending toward the multiple at the same time as the multiple rises toward it. At a 5.5% 10-year the line is 14.5×; at 6.0%, 14.0×.
But quantify it before claiming it matters, because an intermediate draft of this section over-corrected in the other direction. Running the model at a 5.50% 10-year — one more hike plus term premium — the line tightens to 14.50× and the ratio moves from 0.90 to 0.93. That is still comfortably inside the 0.80–1.00 Attractive band. The ratio does not reach the 1.00 fair edge until the 10-year is around 6.55%. And the growth assumption moves the published anchor not at all anywhere between 5% and 8%, because the cap binds across that whole range — which is worth saying plainly, since growth is the input a reader would expect to matter most.
The rate is not the fragile input. The oil deck is, and the derived answer is that this band is NOT robust. The §14 fragility block is machine-computed from two declared uncertainties — forward EPS on the crude deck (C$1.274–C$1.527, derived from the Q2 margin structure net of price-linked royalties and the 2027 hedge book) and analyst dispersion around it (C$1.33–C$1.47) — and it reports that the crude deck alone covers 88% of the distance to the Fair edge — close, and short of crossing. At the crude level actually trading on 21 September (not a hypothetical; the tape while this was written) forward EPS derives to C$1.274 and the ratio to 0.99. At the §11 bull trigger restated to the same WTI basis it derives to C$1.527 and 0.82. Two earlier drafts of this paragraph got the leverage wrong in opposite directions — one understated the downside, the next overstated it by treating costs as fixed and the hedge book as ending in 2026 — so the derivation is published in §14 and the assumption is stated below rather than buried.
| Uncertain input | Range (forward EPS) | Ratio range | Turns Fair at | Closes the gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Forward EPS on the crude deck | C$1.274 – C$1.527 | 0.99 – 0.82 | C$1.26 forward EPS | 88% — stops just short |
| Analyst dispersion around the deck | C$1.33 – C$1.47 | 0.95 – 0.86 | C$1.26 forward EPS | 50% of that same gap |
Together they close 138% of the gap to Fair and 113% of the gap down to deep-Attractive. Neither input crosses an edge on its own; together they clear both. That is the machine-derived statement of what “not robust” means here — not that the band is about to break, but that ordinary moves in two independent inputs, taken together, reach it.
Read the “Turns Fair at” column literally: the band flips to Fair if consensus forward EPS falls to C$1.26 from today’s C$1.4025 — a 10% cut. The derived crude-deck low of C$1.274 sits just above it, so crude alone does not quite get there; crude plus a bearish read of the analyst spread does. The 0.80 edge on the other side needs C$1.57, which the bull case at C$1.527 does not reach. So the fragility is one-sided and points down — an earlier draft claimed both edges were reachable and that is withdrawn.
Everything above depends on how much of a crude move actually reaches earnings. Royalties are price-linked — roughly 12% of petroleum and natural gas revenue — so they fall with the barrel and cushion the downside. And 26% of 2027 net crude is already swapped at about C$93/bbl [11], which is the year a forward multiple is struck on. Net of both, about C$1.63bn of the quarter’s C$2.51bn crude revenue is genuinely price-exposed, giving 1.45× leverage to operating income rather than the 2.23× a costs-are-fixed reading produces. If the company layers more 2027 hedges the leverage falls further and this band gets more robust, not less.
The price route says the same thing from the other side: the ratio reaches 1.00 at C$21.04, 11.5% above today. So Valuation 68 is an honest reading of today’s inputs and a fragile one, and the Half-Size ladder is the appropriate response to that rather than a hedge against nothing.
Cross-checks, which order the name inside the band but cannot move it out. Free-cash yield is 5.8% on enterprise value (6.5% on market cap) — squarely in the 5–8% attractive range for energy. EV/EBITDA is 6.04×. Price/book is 2.12× against a 12.6% return on equity. The analyst panel deepened to 19 from 17: consensus C$20.53 (8.9% upside), median C$20, high C$26, low C$18. The low target is below the current price — at C$18.86 the most cautious covering analyst already sees downside, which is the single clearest argument against adding size here and is why the consensus lens holds the score at 68 rather than lifting it.
Sector median (20% weight): against the name. Canadian producers — a mixed cohort of light-oil, gas-weighted and integrated names, each listed so the median can be re-derived — trade at a median forward P/E of [12] 12.46× (CNQ 12.97×, Suncor 12.18×, Cenovus 12.46×, Tourmaline 13.39×, ARC 12.07×, Peyto 11.29×, Baytex 17.09×). Whitecap at 13.45× is about 8% above that median. Against its own rate-and-growth-warranted multiple it is cheap; against the companies it actually competes with for capital, it is slightly dear. Both are true and the second was missing from an earlier draft entirely.
Own-history decile (15% weight): mid-range — and the earlier draft got here the wrong way. An earlier version substituted the price range for the multiple range, reported the 99th percentile, and asserted that no defensible multiple history existed because the Veren merger split the series in two. That absence claim was false and the disproof was on disk: this name’s own prior calibrations record the forward multiple at 12.89× (16 Jul), 13.39× (9 Sep), 13.80× (31 Jul) and 14.00× (16 Aug). The 27 July run is excluded because it anchored on EV/EBITDA against a warranted 8.0× rather than a P/E; including it makes today fourth of six and changes nothing. Today’s 13.45× ranks third of five — squarely mid-range. The lens therefore agrees with the anchor rather than contradicting it. Caveat stated rather than buried: five observations across ten weeks is a thin series and it carries its 15% weight on that basis, no more.
PEG (10% weight): against the name. 13.45× over our disciplined 6% growth gives 2.24; the vendor’s own longer-run input gives 7.07. Both well above 1.0. PEG is a poor instrument for a commodity producer — the earnings growth here is the oil price, not a compounding franchise — so it carries 10% and no more. It is still the clearest statement that nobody should own this for secular growth.
Implied growth (the reverse-DCF read the subtitle promises). Inverting the same two-stage model at r = 9.44%, the 13.45× the market is paying embeds roughly 2–3% near-term growth against our disciplined 6% and a consensus of +25%. The price is not asking the business to compound. With consensus putting FY2027 earnings 5.6% below FY2026, it is asking rather less than that. That is the strongest single argument in the valuation case, and it is why the anchor survives lenses that lean the other way.
Net: anchor positive (40%), sector median mildly negative (20%) [12], decile neutral (15%), PEG negative (10%), analyst consensus mildly positive (15%). That blend is what holds Valuation at 68 — inside the 0.80–1.00 band, which clamps the score to 65–77, but at the lower end of it rather than the middle. The pillar cannot cross the 65 Decision-Matrix boundary while the ratio stays in band; the live fragility is the ratio itself, which reaches 1.00 at a share price of C$21.04.
Two items the current price does not obviously pay for. Remaining Veren synergies — management has guided to C$2.2bn of 2026 free cash flow with output guidance raised and capital unchanged (ATB Cormark, 20 August); the incremental capture is not in consensus forward EPS. A partial hedge step-up — and an earlier draft called this a roll-off, which this run’s own research disproves. The book does not empty: 33% of H2 2026 net crude is swapped at ~C$94 and 26% of 2027 at ~C$93. The C$520m drag in Gate 8 therefore thins rather than disappearing, taking roughly three-quarters of 2027 volume to spot instead of two-thirds. Real if crude holds, and materially smaller than a roll-off would be. Neither is sized here with confidence, so this is a tilt of roughly +3 points inside the band, not a re-rating.

| Short | 85 | Settled WTI US$100.3 (18 Sep), +16.1% above a 50-day average of US$86.40 that is itself rising US$7.25 over twenty sessions. 4-week momentum +14.2%. Brent US$103.87. No arm of the Step-2b trend cap fires. Marked down from 88 only for the reversal risk described below |
| Medium | 75 | Macro rates Oil Outperform on the medium horizon. Hormuz supply disruption is the mechanism and it is unresolved |
| Long | 55 | Improved from 50. The 20 September macro moved oil's long call from Underperform to Neutral. Still below the 65 bar, so no long-horizon amplification — but the gap has closed |
Every crude level above is a settled 18 September close. On Monday 21 September the screen showed WTI near US$94.19, a 6% fall. That bar had traded ~64,000 lots by the time this was written, against completed sessions of 265,000–435,000. Low volume alone proves nothing — an unfinished session has low volume by construction — so the test applied is narrower: the bar carries no settlement, the exchange has not published a settle for it, and every other price in this report is a completed 18 September close. Mixing one live quote into a settled deck is what makes a report internally inconsistent, so it is excluded on that ground rather than on its volume. It is, however, a live risk and is treated as one: a 6% intraday air-pocket in the driver that supplies 93% of revenue is exactly the Hormuz-reopening path the §11 bear case describes. An earlier draft said that if it settles there the short-horizon driver drops toward Neutral and the Step-2b cap returns. That was asserted rather than derived, and it is wrong. Run the arms at US$94: spot would still sit +8.8% above a 50-day average of US$86.40 that is itself rising US$7.25 over twenty sessions, and +16% above the 200-day, with 4-week momentum still positive. The cap needs spot below a falling 50-day and/or negative 4–8 week momentum — neither arm fires, exactly as Gate 7 reasons for the gas leg. The driver would ease from 85; it would not collapse to Neutral, and the Medium STRONG BUY would survive. What a 6% move does change is the path: it is the first leg of the §11 bear trigger, and it is why the ladder reads Half-Size.
Gas leg, for completeness: Henry Hub settled at US$2.912, above a falling 50-day average, 4- and 6-week momentum positive, 8-week flat at −0.1%. Neutral, base-building — see Gate 7. It is 7% of revenue and cannot carry the thesis either way.
The 20 September macro report rates Energy (XLE) Outperform on all three horizons, unchanged from 9 September, so the pressure is a Tailwind and a long position is Trend-Following. The provenance is weaker than last run and that is declared rather than hidden: WCP.TO no longer appears in the macro report's Economic Watchlist Forecast, so this is a sector-level read mapped to the name, not a name-level signal. Conviction is held at 70 but pillar confidence is cut from 65% to 60% to reflect the substitution. The wider macro is genuinely hostile to equities in general — the Fed hiked 25bp on 16 September on a unanimous vote with 16 of 18 participants expecting at least one more, US Equities are rated Underperform, and the 10-year is at 4.94% — which is precisely why Energy's Outperform is a relative call and is scored as one.

The trend is not in question — price is 18.86 against a 50-day of 17.15 — the price sits 10.0% above it, equivalently the average sits 9.1% below the price — and a 200-day of 14.81, 27.3% below, and relative strength is excellent: +22.8% over three months against SPY's +2.0% (+20.8pp) and the XEG.TO Canadian energy ETF's +18.8% (+4.0pp). The problem is where you would have to buy. The nearest structural support is the 50-day at 17.15; the logical stop sits at C$15.3, which is 7.5 ATR below the current price on a daily ATR of 0.4756. Risking -18.9% to make 11.3% to the base target is a reward-to-risk of roughly 0.6 to 1. That is an unfavourable entry on a favourable chart, and it is the whole reason the Technical entry group matters here.
Daily volume on 18 September was 2.45× the twenty-day average — 14.7m shares against 4.3m the prior session — clearing the 1.5× the Technical entry group requires. An earlier draft discarded it outright as quadruple-witching contamination. The premise is right; the discard was too clean. 18 September was the third Friday and the quarterly expiry, and that claim is testable against this name’s own quarterly expiries:
| Quarterly expiry | Volume | vs 20-day |
|---|---|---|
| 19 Dec 2025 | 7.13m | 1.65× |
| 20 Mar 2026 | 16.26m | 2.09× |
| 19 Jun 2026 | 4.52m | 0.73× |
| 18 Sep 2026 | 14.75m | 2.45× |
Three of four ran hot, one did not. Expiry does inflate volume in this name more often than not, so a 2.45× print on that date cannot be read as clean accumulation — but it is also the highest of the four, above even March, so some genuine interest is likely in there. The honest verdict is uninformative, not disproved. Price moved 1.7% on a 3.4× volume step, which is what rebalancing looks like rather than accumulation.
It does not decide the group in any case, because the momentum condition fails on its own.
The Technical group needs the histogram positive two consecutive days or turning up off support. The series: +0.0032 (16 Sep), −0.0214 (17 Sep), −0.0204 (18 Sep).
First arm: unmet — two consecutive negative sessions, not positive.
Second arm: unmet, and this is a judgement an earlier draft never made. The last step is up, +0.0010, so describing the histogram as “falling” — as an earlier draft did twice — was wrong, and that wording is withdrawn. But one session recovering 5% of a −0.0204 level, straight after a −0.0246 drop, is noise rather than an inflection. “Turning up off support” is read here as requiring a sustained turn; one session at that magnitude is not one.
What rides on it, stated plainly: a reader who takes the opposite view of that arm and accepts the witching volume gets a met Technical group, a Full-Size ladder and a Short back at STRONG BUY. That is the most consequential boundary call in this report. It is held on the momentum arm, and a second positive session settles it either way within about a week.

| 2026-09-18 | Industrial Production MoM (Aug) | 0.0% | +0.3% | −0.3pp miss | Mild negative for industrial crude demand |
| 2026-09-18 | Baker Hughes Rig Count | 595 total (452 oil, 134 gas) | 591 | +4 w/w | A supply response is starting, and an earlier draft understated it by quoting the oil line alone. The total is the highest since May 2024, a second consecutive weekly build, and +53 rigs / +10% year on year. Oil at 452 (+2) is the slower leg. This cuts against the tight-market case rather than supporting it |
Nothing inside three trading days, so the §8 WAIT-for-event override does not fire. The material feature is the 30 September – 2 October cluster: Core PCE, ISM and payrolls inside three days, all High-impact, all relevant to a High-sensitivity sector. That is a catalyst clustering score of 45 — noisy on the framework's 2–3-events-in-14-days band, down from 75 last run. Clustering is a position-sizing input, not a direction call: it does not move the timing score, and it is the reason §13 applies a 0.7× size modifier. The next update is scheduled for 5 October precisely so one refresh captures all three.

Every timeframe points the same way, which is as clean a trend reading as this framework produces. Two qualifications matter. First, the monthly RSI at 76.8 and weekly at 71.5 are both overbought [2] — the daily at 61.5 is the only one with room. No base rate is asserted here for how that asymmetry resolves; it is simply a constraint on how much further the trend can stretch without pausing. Second, every volume ratio marked * is contaminated by the 18 September quadruple-witching expiry and should be read as zero-information, not as confirmation; the 15-min 10.11× in particular is an expiry artefact. Stripping the volume column, the picture is a mature uptrend extended above its own moving averages, with the nearest meaningful support 9.1% below at the 50-day.
Six months of daily closes to the 18 September settled close of C$18.86, with the 50-day average. The June–September advance is the Hormuz re-rating; the flat patch through early September is the consolidation the Technical entry group is waiting to resolve.
The Hormuz disruption persists or widens and Brent holds well above US$110. Whitecap's free-cash yield rises — though not to the level an unhedged producer would see, because 33% of H2 2026 crude is swapped at C$94 and 26% of 2027 at C$93 (Gate 8) — Canadian light oil re-rates toward the 15.0× guardrail, and the remaining Veren synergies land on top of the raised output guidance. C$24.5 is 15× a 2027 EPS of about C$1.633, and that number is stated here so it can be falsified: on this report's own 1.45× leverage it needs crude roughly 11% above the 18 September settle — WTI ~US$112, Brent ~US$116, which is above the +6.1% bull end used in the §4 fragility range, and about 16% above the C$1.4025 FY2027 consensus. An earlier draft attributed the lift to the hedge book “rolling off”; that is withdrawn — the book does not empty, it thins from 33% to 26%, which contributes but does not get there alone. Trigger: Brent sustained near US$116, not merely above US$110.
Crude settles in a US$85–100 band — disrupted but not escalating — and Whitecap converts its raised guidance into the C$2.2bn of 2026 free cash flow management has pointed to. The multiple stays where it is rather than re-rating; the return comes from earnings and the 3.87% dividend. C$21 is 15.0× × forward EPS of C$1.4025, which is the warranted fair value of C$21.04 rounded to the scenario grid. Trigger: nothing in particular — this is the path if the current state simply persists.
The live one, and Monday made it visible. A negotiated Hormuz reopening, or an OPEC+ supply response, takes crude back toward US$70. The 6% intraday fall on 21 September is a rehearsal for this path, not evidence of it. Whitecap's cost advantage survives — this is not a solvency case — but the equity de-rates with the barrel and the hedge book, helpfully, cushions only a third of the volume. C$14.5 is near the 200-day average and below the June breakout. Trigger: a credible Hormuz de-escalation headline, or an OPEC+ quota increase.
Probability-weighted target: C$20.25 (0.25 × C$24.5 + 0.50 × C$21 + 0.25 × C$14.5), or +7.4% against the C$18.86 stamp. Weights sum to 100% and the base case is the most probable, as the framework requires. Note what that number says: the probability-weighted return is below the base-case return of 11.3%, because a 23% bear tail at a quarter weight is heavy enough to eat most of it. That asymmetry is the argument for the Half-Size ladder rather than a full position.
Forecast:
Fundamental — met now. Open today and stays open while price is below C$21.04. Confidence: High.
Technical — forecast 1–3 weeks, confidence Moderate. The binding condition is the MACD histogram. It is at −0.0204 after a one-session up-tick of +0.0010, close enough that a second positive session would resolve it — which is why this forecast is weeks rather than months. The alternative path is a pullback that resets it — the 20-day at C$18.31 is 2.9% below, the 50-day at C$17.15 is 9.1% below. A pullback into C$17.15–18.31 on a positive histogram turn is the entry this report is waiting for, and it would also fix the risk-reward problem in §7 by moving the stop closer. Clean volume confirmation cannot be read until the witching distortion clears the 20-day average, around 16 October.
Catalyst — forecast 28 October, confidence Moderate. Q3 results are the next company event that could fire this group.
Forecast:
No exit trigger is live, so the action is Hold. The nearest is the profit-target group: price needs +6.0% to reach the C$20 median target — about half the move to the base case, and the daily RSI would have to run from 61.5 to 70 — plausible inside a month if the trend continues. Confidence: Moderate. The thesis-invalidation group is the one to watch rather than the stop: it needs two of four, currently has zero, and the driver condition is the one a sustained crude reversal would flip. Confidence that it stays unlit: Moderate, explicitly conditional on the 18 September crude level holding.
You are risking -18.9% to the stop in order to gain 11.3% to the base target — about 0.6 to 1, which is the wrong way round.
What you are risking: C$3.56 per share to the C$15.3 stop, C$4.36 to the C$14.5 bear. You would be buying 2.7% under the 52-week high, 7.5 ATR above the logical stop on a daily ATR of C$0.4756, with the Technical entry group unmet and the 30 September–2 October macro cluster still ahead of you. The most cautious of 19 covering analysts already has a target of C$18 — below today's price.
What you are gaining: the 3.87% dividend while you hold, 8.9% to the C$20.53 consensus, participation in a driver that has run 30.9% in three months, and the partial hedge step-up described in §4.
Read: waiting materially improves the deal. A pullback into C$17.15–C$18.31 would open the Technical group and halve the stop distance — one event fixes both problems. That is why the ladder reads Half-Size rather than Wait: the fundamental path is genuinely open, so a starter is defensible; the balance belongs on the pullback.
You would be giving up 11.3% to the base case and C$21.04 of warranted fair value on a stock trading at C$18.86 — selling roughly 10% below what the anchor says it is worth, plus the dividend and the partial 2027 hedge step-up.
What you would protect: the 23% fall to the C$14.5 bear case, which Monday's 6% intraday crude air-pocket made considerably less theoretical than it looked on Friday.
Read: no exit rule is triggered [1]. Not one of the three exit groups is live. This is a hold, and for an existing position the honest framing is that you are being paid a dividend to wait while a single geopolitical headline sets the outcome.
No allocation or portfolio role was specified for this name, so a portfolio percentage is not computed. What the framework does say about relative size is still usable:
| Lever | Value | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Conviction ladder (§12) | Half-Size | 0.5× — one of three entry paths open |
| Quality factor | 72 / 70 | 1.03× |
| Confidence factor | min pillar conf 55% | 0.92× — the driver pillar is the weakest link |
| Catalyst clustering | 45 | 0.7× — the 30 Sep–2 Oct cluster |
Multiplied through, those four take a notional full position to roughly a third of it. Volatility context: daily ATR C$0.4756 is 2.5% of price; beta 0.70 against the market, which understates the real risk here because the exposure is to crude, not to equities. A C$15.3 stop is -18.9% away — wide enough that the position size, not the stop, is the risk control at this entry.

THIS FIGURE HAS BEEN REVISED TWICE AND BOTH REVISIONS ARE RECORDED, because the leverage assumption is the whole input and it was wrong twice in opposite directions. (1) A first draft used 1.05x down against 1.42x up - two elasticities on one model, mixing WTI and Brent, understating the downside. (2) A second draft corrected that to a symmetric 2.05x, which assumed COSTS ARE FIXED on a price move. They are not: royalties are ~12% of petroleum and natural gas revenue and are price-linked, so they fall with the barrel and damp the leverage. That draft also assumed the swap book effectively ends with H2 2026 (~8% of forward volume). It does not - Whitecap has 26% of 2027 net crude swapped at ~C$93/bbl, and 'forward' EPS is a 2027 number. (3) Derivation used here: crude ~93% of C$2,698.5m Q2 revenue = C$2,509.6m; net of ~12% royalty = C$2,208.4m; net of the 26% 2027 hedge = C$1,634.3m of price-exposed revenue against C$1,123.9m operating income = 1.45x. Low end = the crude level ACTUALLY TRADING on 21 September (~US$94, -6.3%), so -9.2% on EPS. High end = the section 11 bull trigger, Brent sustained above US$110, restated to the WTI basis used throughout (~US$106.4, +6.1%) so the two ends share one benchmark, giving +8.9%. Trigger 2 (valuation extreme): warranted_ratio 0.8965, nowhere near the 2.0 deep-expensive arm, and actual 13.447 is below the 15.0 Energy guardrail so the expensive-plus-catalyst arm cannot fire; val_band is 'attractive', not 'na', so neither arm is suppressed by exemption. Trigger 3 (negative revisions): direction is opposite - eps_forward 1.397 -> 1.4025, consensus target 20.03 -> 20.53, coverage 17 -> 19. Trigger 4 (insider selling): searched 2026-09-21 across get_stock_news (10 articles, 24 Feb - 8 Sep) and a web query for Whitecap insider/officer dispositions; nothing found. Recorded in the section 15 audit rather than in absence_searches, because the claim is OPEN-WORLD - no single fetchable artifact would contain it - and absence_searches is for re-greppable documents. Trigger 5 (structural threat): the 8 Sep Tamarack-Headwater merger is C$10bn; an earlier draft published C$7.24bn, which was wrong - that is the US$ figure and it is superseded here and sits in the CLEARWATER HEAVY-OIL play at >80,000 boe/d, an adjacent fairway rather than Whitecap light-oil acreage. Also withdrawn as REASONING rather than as values, and framed in place: the MACD described as falling when its last step rose; the quad-witching volume described as discarded rather than uninformative; the claim that no defensible multiple history exists; and the assertion that a 6% crude fall drops the driver to Neutral.",

MJ-1 Gate 1 publishes its definition of declining; the invented E&P carve-out withdrawn and filed. MJ-2 MACD described as falling when the last step rose; both arms now adjudicated. MJ-3 witching discard tested against four quarterly expiries and downgraded to uninformative. MJ-4 Tamarack corrected to C$10bn and to the Clearwater heavy-oil play. MJ-6 110bp corrected to 95bp, then re-corrected after over-swinging. MJ-7 sector median and implied growth added; decile recomputed on the multiple history that was on disk. MJ-8 three count contradictions. MJ-9 driver-collapse assertion withdrawn. MJ-11 rig count 595/+4/highest since May 2024. Minors m1-m8.",
"post_audit_fixes_round2": "BL-A withdrawn reasoning survived in four places while section 7 claimed it was withdrawn - changes box, header dek, section 12 Technical header, and the short_cap_reason and driver_commodity_trend machine fields. All rewritten and the BUILT html then grepped for every withdrawn string, the step round 1 skipped. Root cause: superseded_values declared 2 of the 8 values the round replaced, so a true sweep over an incomplete set read as clean. All 8 declared. BL-B the audit trail was destroyed by a rebuild after the round close; fixed structurally - the spec builder now carries post_audit_fixes_*, audit_route_note, delta_vs_prior, threshold_fragility and lint back from the live calibration, so ordering can no longer lose them. MJ-A derive_fragility printed max(covers_worsening, covers_improving) under the label 'the nearer gap' - 70% where the nearer figure was 64%; fixed in the shared script, label now names the edge. MJ-B the crude-deck range used 1.05x leverage down against 1.42x up and mixed WTI with Brent; re-derived from the report's own Q2 margins to 1.221/1.572, and the consequence is material - the crude deck ALONE now crosses to Fair where the old range said it stopped short, so the error ran in the flattering direction. Minors: 90bp, the excluded 27 Jul EV/EBITDA observation stated, a broken clause, next-11-days, peer cohort composition.",
"post_audit_fixes_round3": "MJ-C the crude elasticity was wrong twice, in opposite directions, and both corrections are recorded. Royalties are price-linked at ~12% of P&NG revenue and 26% of 2027 net crude is swapped at ~C$93 - verified from company disclosure rather than assumed. Leverage 2.05x -> 1.45x; endpoints 1.274/1.527 restated onto one benchmark; the crude deck covers 88% and does NOT cross alone, so round 3's 'crosses alone', 'in either direction' and 'both edges' are withdrawn and the fragility is now one-sided pointing down. The cost-fixity assumption is stated in section 4 prose. MJ-D lint, threshold_fragility and delta_vs_prior removed from the builder's carry set - the lint receipt records only a filename, constant across rebuilds of a stamp, so carrying it would pass LAYER0-RECEIPT while describing the previous build; the two derived fields are re-derived instead because the carry guard tests emptiness, not freshness. carry_provenance was stripped and never restored across three rounds; the sanctioned carry_forward block is wired in and this report's own carried_verbatim is merged back rather than replaced. MJ-E DELTA_FIELDS widened to carry clean_pe, nonop_pct_of_net_income, economic_alignment_source and catalyst_clustering_score, and superseded_sweep now treats an explicit A -> B arrow as the supersession statement it is. Minors: section 8's subtitle comes from the builder's default table rather than the spec, which is why next-11-days survived three rounds of editing the spec; the bull endpoint is restated from Brent to the WTI basis used throughout; 'three published figures' corrected to five, naming the crude-deck range as the omitted one.",
"post_audit_fixes_round4": "MJ-F round 4's own finding - that 26% of 2027 crude stays hedged - falsified four statements elsewhere that still described a hedge ROLL-OFF. Restated in all four: section 4 embedded optionality, the section 11 bull case, and two places in section 12. The book thins 33% to 26%; it does not empty. MJ-G the bull target C$24.50 implies 2027 EPS C$1.633, which is 16% above the C$1.4025 FY2027 consensus the base case anchors on; the bull now states what it requires - crude ~11% above the settle, WTI ~112 / Brent ~116, ABOVE the +6.1% bull end used in the fragility range - so it can be falsified. eps_2027e corrected 1.63 -> 1.633 with the basis. Also disclosed: the +25.2% 'consensus growth' is FY2027 against a partly pre-merger TRAILING figure; like for like, FY2026 C$1.485 -> FY2027 C$1.4025 is MINUS 5.6%, so consensus has earnings falling. The 6% sector cap binds either way and the anchor is unaffected, but the report no longer quotes only the flattering half. Minors: 87% aligned to the derived 88%; the C$1.63 collision between crude revenue and bull EPS separated; no_double_count declared. PARKED with debt filed: MJ-H (arrow rule is positional not semantic, not firing) and the model_integrity no-op on earnings-anchored models.",
"post_audit_fixes_round5": "Closed the four minors the PASS listed: the 87 percent in valuation_model.basis aligned to the derived 88; the C$1.63bn / C$1.633 collision separated in reader-facing prose; the growth cell now carries BOTH bases (+25.2% trailing, -5.6% like for like) rather than only the flattering one; and the hedge disclosure - the most load-bearing input in section 4, since it sets the 1.45x leverage that decides whether the crude deck crosses the band edge - declared as src-hedge and cited, closing CITE-MARKET. Filed TRAIL-CLAIMS-UNVERIFIED (P1): three of five rounds ended with a post_audit_fixes field asserting a fix the built artifact falsified, because the trail records a round's INTENT while the artifact records its EXECUTION and nothing reconciles the two.",

One failed source and one degraded source, both carried into the scores rather than noted and ignored. The FMP grades endpoint returned HTTP 402 and is simply unavailable on this subscription — that is a standing limitation, not a transient error, and it means firm-level analyst actions cannot be read for any name until the plan changes. Timing confidence is 60% rather than 70% as a result. The macro watchlist drop costs Economic Alignment 5 points of confidence. Overall confidence is 60% — the minimum of the three fundamental pillars (Quality 70, Valuation 75, Timing 60), which is how the framework derives it. The driver pillar is lower still at 55%, and on this name that is the number worth weighting: the thesis rests on a geopolitical chokepoint whose next move is unforecastable.
