Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, NYSE:TSM) BUY

2026-07-31Current US$405.27Short BUY · Med BUY · Long STRONG BUYBear US$325Base US$475Bull US$560

A half-size starter buy at $405 — the world's dominant AI chip foundry, on all three horizons (short BUY, medium BUY, long STRONG BUY). It's only half a position, not a full one, because the stock sits below its $425 50-day line while the semiconductor tape is in a stated bear market. Add the second tranche on a $425 reclaim or a $385 bounce.

TSMC is the world's largest dedicated semiconductor foundry, based in Hsinchu, Taiwan. It manufactures the most advanced chips — the N3 and N2 nodes — for the companies that design but don't build, like Apple and Nvidia. The shares analysed here are the New York-listed ADR.

The business

The business is genuinely rare — it compounds at hyper-scale rates while throwing off cash-cow margins. Last quarter revenue grew thirty-six percent, at a record sixty-seven-point-seven percent gross margin and around forty percent return on equity, and 2026 guidance was raised above forty percent growth. It sits on net cash, with debt-to-equity of just fifteen hundredths and interest cover near two hundred and eighty-five times. The one blemish is cash conversion: record capital spending of sixty to sixty-four billion dollars — an accelerated Arizona build-out — pulls the free-cash-flow yield down to about one-point-eight percent.

The price

On forward earnings the name is genuinely attractive — about twenty-one times, a price-earnings-to-growth ratio near nine-tenths, and analysts rate it a buy with a five-hundred-and-ninety-six-dollar consensus target, roughly forty-seven percent above the price. But that forward multiple front-runs growth we've already haircut. On today's earnings the trailing multiple is twenty-eight to thirty times — right at our warranted twenty-seven-point-five and the sector guardrail — with price-to-book near ten. Net, valuation scores the top of Fair: attractive if AI capex holds, full if it digests. Crucially it is not Expensive — the warranted ratio is nought-point-seven-six — so the long horizon stays strong-buy-eligible.

The timing — why only half

This is why the call is a half-size starter, not a full buy. Price at four-oh-five is below the twenty-, fifty- and two-hundred-day averages that matter near-term, the daily momentum is negative, and the whole semiconductor tape is in a stated bear market. The constructive tells are that the monthly and weekly trends are still confirmed uptrends, the daily momentum gauge has recovered off its lows to about forty-six, and the stock is holding the three-eighty-five shelf. Reward to the four-seventy-five base is about seventeen percent against roughly six percent of risk to the three-eighty stop — a positive skew, but one that argues for scaling in rather than a full position today.

What could go wrong

The risks are real and deserve equal weight. First, the Taiwan-China geopolitical tail — a genuine two-way risk that's structural rather than a dated event. Second, an armed systemic tail in the macro backdrop: an index-level AI-concentration, or earnings-quality, unwind. TSMC's own earnings are clean, but that de-rating would drag the entire semiconductor cohort — already in a bear market — and it's exactly what the bear scenario prices in. And third, valuation: a trailing multiple of twenty-eight to thirty times at fifty-two-week highs, price-to-book near ten, and a free-cash-flow yield of only about one-point-eight percent leave little cushion if AI capex pauses. The half position is the risk control.

Risk vs Reward

Base

Bull

Over twelve months the base case is about four hundred and seventy-five dollars, a fifty-five percent probability — AI-led growth continues at a twenty-two-to-twenty-four-times forward multiple, roughly seventeen percent above the price. The bull case is around five hundred and sixty, at twenty-five percent, if the N2 ramp runs ahead and the semiconductor de-rate reverses. The bear case is about three hundred and twenty-five, at twenty percent, if AI capex digests and that systemic unwind drags the multiple toward the mid-teens — a roughly twenty-percent fall. Blend them and the probability-weighted value is near four hundred and sixty-six, a modest positive skew.

The verdict

Short BUYMedium BUYLong STRONG BUY

So it's a buy on all three horizons — short, medium, and a strong buy on the long — but a disciplined, half-size starter rather than a full position. You're buying a structurally dominant, net-cash, sixty-seven-percent-margin AI compounder on about twenty-one times forward earnings, into a near-term downtrend and an armed systemic tail. Take half now, and keep the second tranche for a reclaim of the four-twenty-five fifty-day line or a bounce off three-eighty-five. Educational, not advice — the near-term tape and AI-capex headlines are the things to watch.
