Alphabet is the toll-booth on internet search and video — Search, YouTube, Android, Chrome and Google Cloud — with a wide moat and a quality score of 82. Re-presenting the Donatien Investment report on Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL), dated 20 July 2026, at US$351.99. HOLD on the short, medium and long horizons.

The toll-booth on search and video

Alphabet is the parent of Google — Search, YouTube, Android, Chrome, Maps and Gmail, plus a fast-growing cloud arm. At its core it is a digital-advertising machine: it sells the attention of billions of users across the world's most-used search engine and video platform, and that throws off enormous, high-margin cash flow. The edge is unmatched distribution and data scale — Google is the default front door to the internet — reinforced by the Android and Chrome ecosystem and a leading AI research arm. Business quality is high, at eighty-two. Founder super-voting control aligns the long term, though stock-based pay is elevated.

Great business, wrong price

The valuation is where a great business becomes only a hold. On clean operating earnings Alphabet trades near thirty-eight times, about one-and-a-half times — 1.58 times — the multiple we can warrant from rates and disciplined growth, and comfortably above the twenty-six-times sector guardrail. So the valuation pillar scores just thirty-six, firmly in the expensive band. Cash makes it starker: roughly a hundred and eighty-five billion dollars a year of AI capital spending, an enormous and still-unproven bet, keeps free cash flow thin. Our valuation-ceiling gate caps the signal at hold before any upgrade — the classic great business at the wrong price.

A hold on earnings-eve

Timing seals it. The daily chart has broken support and sits below its fifty-day average, the timing pillar is a middling fifty-two, and Q2 earnings land the very next day — a binary event that adds a hold-side gate. Underneath, the moat is under a named attack: AI answer-engines like ChatGPT increasingly give generative answers that disintermediate the classic results page, the crown-jewel advertising surface, and consumer search is low-friction to switch. None of that impairs the business today; it is a reason not to chase the stock here. Hold the quality and wait for a cheaper multiple or a confirmed entry.

What could go wrong

Q2 earnings 21/22 Jul is a binary event. AI answer-engines disintermediate core Search. Cohort de-rating bear ~$225 if AI tail triggers.
