A dominant dual franchise — number-one Western e-commerce plus AWS, the world's largest cloud — with a wide moat and quality 74. HOLD on every horizon: clean earnings near 40x against ~27x warranted, and record AI capex has erased free cash flow. Great business, wrong price.
Re-presenting the Donatien Investment report on Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN), dated 20 July 2026, at US$249.99. HOLD on the short, medium and long horizons.
Amazon is really two businesses under one roof. A low-margin retail machine — the marketplace, the fulfilment network and more than two hundred million Prime members — drives the volume, and AWS, the world's largest cloud, together with a fast-growing advertising arm, drives the earnings. Group revenue runs about seven hundred and forty billion dollars, growing thirteen per cent, with operating margins near eleven and a half per cent and rising as the cloud and ads mix lifts profitability. The moat is wide and multi-sourced. The one blemish on quality is earnings honesty: about thirty per cent of reported net income is non-operating mark-ups on equity stakes, so we score on clean operating earnings.

Here is why a great business is only a hold. On clean operating earnings Amazon trades near forty times, against a warranted multiple closer to twenty-seven times that we can justify from rates and disciplined growth — so the price is expensive, and the valuation pillar scores just thirty-three. Cash makes it starker: operating cash flow is elite, but more than a hundred billion dollars of AI and cloud capital spending has erased free cash flow, leaving it around zero. Our valuation-ceiling gate caps the signal at hold before any upgrade, because a forty-times multiple is priced for a near-flawless future.

Timing seals it. The short-term trend has turned bearish, the timing pillar sits at a middling fifty, and the calendar is loaded: a Federal Reserve decision, a growth reading and an inflation print all cluster around the thirty July earnings report — a stock that routinely moves more than five per cent on results. None of that is a reason to sell a compounder you want to own; it is a reason not to chase it here. The honest read is patience: hold the quality, and wait for either a cheaper multiple or a confirmed technical entry after the events clear.

Q2 earnings 30 Jul; AMZN routinely moves >5%. AI-concentration tail armed; bear case ~$180. Azure + Google Cloud narrowing AWS's lead.

Against the current US$249.99, the report frames a bull case at US$305 (+22%), a base case at US$258 (+3%) and a bear case at US$180 (-28%). See the full report for the probability weight behind each path.
